TATOO REMOVAL
Laser Tattoo Removal
At Quantum laser we use a technology called ND YAG Q switched. ND YAG stands for neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet. In simple terms it means it is a crystal used as the medium in laser treatments. Q switched mode produces two wavelengths and refers to the technique of making the laser produce a high intensity beam in very short pulses. Machines without the Q switched technology cannot provide the desired results as they are not powerful enough to shatter the tattoo ink particles.
When the laser beam comes into contact with the tattoo ink it creates a photoacoustic shock wave that releases the heat from the tattoo ink and shatters it into minute particles. When this response takes place, this is known as a photo mechanical effect. Once the particles are shattered they are able to be carried away by the macrophages (the body's immune response) through the lymphatic system. This then leaves the body through the kidneys into the urine.

What To Expect In The Consultation
When attending your consultation, our expert technician will assess your treatment options. You will be asked to fill out a form with your personal details and medical history so we can assess whether it is safe to perform a patch test. A patch test will be performed on a small area of the skin to see if you are suitable for treatment. This is also to ensure you do not have an adverse reaction to the laser.
If there are no adverse reactions 48 hours after the patch test then it is safe to go ahead with treatment.
What To Expect At The Appointment
When you come for your appointment, the area being treated will be cleansed and you will be asked to wear protective glasses. We will cool the area with a cool pack and start applying the laser light to the tattoo. This can feel like an elastic band flicking off the skin. As the ND Q switch hits a tattoo it can make a loud cracking noise when the tattoo ink absorbs the photo shock wave. The skin can become white with a frosting affect (this is a good sign) that usually lasts around 20 minutes. Other common side effects after treatment are pin point bleeding, redness and swelling of the area which can be eased with cool packs and anti-histamine medication.
Once treatment is complete we will cleanse the area, apply aloe vera gel which aids the healing process and a dressing if needed. If you are worried about pain we can stop at regular intervals to cool the skin. We will do all we can to make you as comfortable as possible.
